Feeling Restricted

Columbia River Gorge

I love Portland, Oregon. What I don’t like is not being able to stay in it – at least without paying through the nose or in an uncomfortable place. Even though I’m staying in a nice looking park, Jantzen Beach, it is very noisy with the railroad and airport nearby. Any other RV places in the area are either dumps or distant or very expensive…

I’ll probably stay here another week – cause I love Portland – but I spent the day driving up and down the Columbia River Gorge looking for an alternative. Unfortunately I didn’t find anything close to Portland, but I did find some decent – though isolated – places. There’s definitely something to be said for the “stealth camping” that some full timers do (though usually not in an RV).

So the frustration that I run into when traveling, is that I can’t stay wherever I want (I sound pretty spoiled don’t I?). Either I feel restricted because of a lack of good camp sites or because I can’t find good Sprint coverage for Internet access.

A lot of it is my fault. As I drove nearly 200 miles today in the Jeep, I thought that maybe I’m holding onto this too tightly. Lately, especially out here in the NW, I often come across RV’ers with their rigs sitting next to a lake or in a park – not camped, but just enjoying the day. I don’t know where they’re spending the night (most are very closed mouthed when I ask), but at least they don’t seem too concerned about where they spend their day.

I’m trying Ringo, I’m trying real hard to be the Carefree Taoist Nomad Shepherd. :) I’m so very tempted just to sell everything I own and pull a Jack Reacher/Kwai Chang Caine.

That’s what I like to do Wayne…..park wherever I enjoy the day, and then stealth camp at night in my Westfalia. After dark I pull into a nice neighborhood. Try to find a place to park where it’s not really clear which house I am parking by, so each can think it belongs to the neighbor. Downside is having to pull out when the sun comes up. I’d love to be able to sleep in ;-) . But then, I can always nap by that lake or park in the day.
