Why is there a God/Source at all?

A question via Wisdom For Alms:

While I’ve grown in the understanding of God/Source and how we create our own reality, Law of Attraction and the like, the one question that I haven’t come to terms with is why is there ANY of this? Why is there a God/Source at all? This is not asked from an angry or hostile place, just a curious wondering. Thank you for your time. – Gail

Why is there ANY of this? Why is there a God/Source at all?

My response below the break.

Hi Gail.

Why is there ANY of this? Why is there a God/Source at all?

Those are very good questions.

My answer will at first sound like standard nondual parroting babble, but bear with me, there is a profound mystical conclusion to it…

I want you to think about something. Notice that you have NEVER seen your face without some OTHER object—a mirror, a photograph, a video, a reflection in a still pool. You have never seen yourself without the help of some other object. It has ALWAYS required two things: you and something else.

In a similar sense, you have never experienced “yourself” without consciousness. Every time that you’ve thought about yourself, had an emotion, experienced a taste or smell or sound, you were conscious. Even while dreaming you were somewhat conscious. But notice that in a deep, dreamless sleep, you seem to disappear—you go away. You “vanish” and the world itself vanishes with you. (Note: some advanced meditators experience a “continuance,” a subtle consciousness during dreamless sleep, but that isn’t the norm and beyond the scope of this answer.)

When there is nothing to compare yourself to, nothing to bounce yourself off of, you vanish. You exist (you don’t die), but you seem to disappear.

Many nondual traditions use the above logic to “prove” that there is no separation between you and other. That you can’t exist without other. That the two of you must be inseparable. Personally, I think this is a cop out, a rationalization, a mental concept, an easy way for nondualists to say, “I figured this out! I’m enlightened!”

As a mystic, I resist this trying to prove and rationalize Oneness. The logic implies She (God, the Divine, Whatever-you-call-Her) is nothing more than a single all-encompassing emptiness/nothingness/awareness—a big, dumb, dead Opening. Nondual logic completely ignores Her intelligence and emotion. Their logic doesn’t explain Synchronicity (Her intelligence), or Love or Appreciation or Gratitude (Her emotions). It just says, we can’t exist without other so there is no real we or other, just one giant inseparable Thing.

Now the mystic knows this isn’t the whole truth. The mystic realizes that this “Ultimate Thing” has emotions, has an intelligence. Indeed, you could say that the difference between a mystic and a nondualist is that the mystic recognizes the nature of Oneness. That the Oneness (Her) has properties (something that no serious nondualist would ever admit to—properties imply separation).

So now let us get back to your questions.

Why does She exist? Remember, at the Oneness level, there is no She AND you. There is no She OR you. There is only Oneness. So you could say, at the Oneness level, She (Source/God) doesn’t exist at all. There is no separation, there is no other, there is only Oneness.

Remember our analogy above about the “nothingness” of dreamless sleep. During dreamless sleep you seem to “vanish.” There seems to be no you. But you do exist during that state, and, like the Oneness, you have intelligence and emotions.

When you wake up from that sleep, the world forms. “You” appear out of the nothingness along with everything else.

Do you see where I’m going?

When the Oneness wakes from the dreamless state, She (God/Source/etc.) appears along with Everything Else.

From the Oneness (the Divine Dreamless State), She appears and She has Intelligence and Emotions in the exact same way as you have. You could even say She has a Desire and a Will. A Divine Urge to know Herself, to see Herself.

She has Desire and Will and through you, She loves and sees and appreciates Herself. She is grateful for you and your sense of separation. (Her feelings and intentions obviously can’t be proven to anyone, but nonetheless they are resoundly felt, seen and understood by anyone at the Radiant level).

The nondualist say the true nature of the Universe is like the dreamless sleep state. That the world and all its wonders are just “dream objects” of a lesser, inferior state of nondual awareness.

The mystic knows better. The mystic realizes that all states: Awake, Dreaming, and Dreamless are all the natural states of God.

She is you. All Your emotions are Her emotions. Through you, She experiences Herself. When you are awake, She is Awake. When you dream, She Dreams. When you sleep the dreamless sleep, you and She become One.

  1. So you`re saying that this Source exists and doesn`t exist same time? But in order to not exist, it had to exist in the first place. And vice versa.
My mind is sh*ting bricks right now – pardon my French 😀

And this is a standard nondual answer I guess. But somehow it doesn`t seem very complete.

  2. @Andrei: It’s like a Zen koan I guess: Do YOU exist while in a dreamless sleep? 🙂

The mystic: “The mystic knows better. The mystic realizes that all states: Awake, Dreaming, and Dreamless are all the natural states of God.”

  3. Do i exist in dreamless sleep? Well, no. But I existed PRIOR to it and I will exist AFTER I wake up as well. And if it wasn`t for my existence then there would be nobody to be in a dreamless sleep anyway. So i guess the answer would be YES, I do exist in a dreamless sleep – I am right there even when I`m not….
Hmm, just like with this Source. It exists when it exists and it exists when it stops existing… hmm, yeah this is like the ultimate Zen koan ever 😀 Some things simply cant be answered, and thats the beauty in it. And now I understand that the answer can never be “complete” because it doesn`t belong to the world of logic. And it`s “good” it doesn`t.

Reminds me of the words of Huayan master Fazang:

Seeing that form is emptiness manifests great wisdom
and one does not abide in samsara.
Seeing that emptiness is form manifests great compassion
and one does not abide in samsara.
When form and emptiness are non-dual,
compassion and wisdom are not different.
