A Moral Dilemma

Prairie Dog Pondering

Eagle Nest SP, NM—On my other blog, I just posted my strategy for launching The Carefree Diet. There’s a serious logic flaw: It has a moral dilemma built into it.

More below the break (huh?).

If you read my strategy, you’ll see that readers, reviewers, bloggers, or anyone else who grabs a free copy (or whom I send a pre-launch review copy), is faced with a difficult choice:

  1. Tell their friends/readers about the free copies being given away during the 3 day launch and earn no commission.
  2. Or don’t tell their friends until after the launch and earn a hefty commission.

Save your friends money – or – make money for yourself.

When I came up with the idea of free copies to “seed” the market, I was faced with a similar dilemma: Do I tell early reviewers about the affiliate program (which would hurt my chances of getting free copies out there), or not tell them about the affiliate program and just say, “Hey, free copies for three days.”

In the end, I decided to take the easy way out to be honest and push the moral dilemma onto the readers/reviewers shoulders. Probably not the smartest strategy (business-wise), but that’s what I decided on.

Kinda stupid huh?

I’d love you to help spread the word and tell your friends about the free copies of The Carefree Diet—but I’ll understand if you don’t.

  1. I already posted over on the Carefree blog but I wanted to post here for those who may not be following that site.

I don’t see a moral dilemma. It’s as simple as “follow your heart and do what feels right to you.”

It will all work out exactly as it is supposed to 🙂

  2. Wayne – I agree with Maria and see no dilemma. A dilemma would only arise when this is viewed from a dualistic perspective – that of a personal self &/or of others being separate. That said, I “get” that many (most?) may see a possible dilemma.

I found your site(s) through Mobile Kodgers and Glen at To Simplify. Interestingly, I’m close to joining you nomads out there (a few months), and also happen to experience life through the lens of non-dualism / Advaita, etc. having seen the illusion of the ego-self awhile ago. So, another example of “no accidents” or synchronicity.

I mainly wanted to stop in, say hi, and add that I enjoy your posts and your recent activities of en-“light”-ening people in a couple of ways! : )

  3. FYI – On this page – http://thecarefreediet.com/ – you have two imbedded links that take people to other phishing pages. On the words”Diet Plan” is a link that takes you to a site trying to sell gift cards that puts you in a loop when trying to exit. The other is on the words”Lose Weight” – it takes you to a special K Diet Plan.

  4. Uh oh Doug. Looks like you have a virus on your computer (you scared the crap out of me, I thought the site had been hacked). I just checked on two different browsers and neither showed the links you warned about (but thanks!).

Some viruses attack the browsers and “pre-read” websites that the user navigates to, inserts the links on certain words, THEN displays the page. Sounds like you got one. To check, go to another computer and see if you get the same results.

    Thanks for the warning though.

  5. You are correct. My office computer (if I browsed during work time) is full of virus, held in check by Norton. I went back and only one was there this time neither was there when I checked on my phone.

Would it be considered self-centered and un-enlightened to wish all hackers were injected with a virus that killed them slowly and painfully while their body parts did things they were never meant to do?

  6. I have told everyone I know about the carefree diet. I want them to buy it. Humans are insane about stuff that is so simple and easy to fix. Nobody needs to go hungry,be fat, or shoot guns at each other. Ignorance is not bliss.

  7. @Keith: Good points.

@Everyone: Both Keith and Maria are both early adopters, so their words really mean a lot to me that they are so enthusiastic about The Carefree Diet.

  8. I didn’t read this at the time. But my take on it was that I wanted to test it on myself before recommending it to anybody else.
