February 29, 2012: Leap Day

Chair by the Lake on a Hot Afternoon

Steele Creek Park, COE Camp, Whitney, TX

The afternoon is warm—almost hot—and there is a light breeze in the air. I strip down to my boxers and sit outside and feel the sun’s heat on my skin.

The lake is still, the birds having gone to wherever birds go on a lazy afternoon. An osprey screams/chirps—in that odd way that ospreys do—far across the water on the distant shore.

I take a sip of beer and feel its coolness coat my mouth. I wait a moment, letting the flavor fill my cheeks—fill my being—then swallow. Its coolness slides down my throat as the bubbles tickle and caress my tongue.

A single engine plane flies overhead. I hear its hum, but don’t see it up there. A pilot behind the controls, following a course so vastly different from my own.

The metal on my camper pops then goes silent as the panels expand and contract in the heat.

The sun beats down. The lake is still.

Sweat beads on my brow and my mind stirs.

I think how hard I was on a reader today and I feel a tinge of regret. Was my point about transparency more important than his feelings?

I push the thought away—what can I do about it now?—and open up and surrender and merge into Her.

My boundaries expand to infinity and I am both at once Vast and Miniscule. She is Everything and I am Nothing.

The breeze gently taps the open trailer door against its stop—thunk, thunk, thunk, and the hose bib drips continuously.

Below the faucet I can almost hear the grass whispering with each drop of water, “Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you.”

The osprey has grown silent.

A lone crow caws.

But this time, there is no answering taunt.

  1. “I think how hard I was on a reader today and I feel a tinge of regret. Was my point about transparency more important than his feelings?”

    Of course it was.
Someone who doesn’t take their own “points” seriously is not likely to anyone else’s either.
Much less have their feelings hurt when points are pointed at them.

She’ll lead you until you find there is no “She”, no “me”, and no “you” outside the words and thoughts themselves.

The human mind needs stories to engage itself and will make up stories about no stories and thoughts about no thoughts merely to remain engaged

    This is fine.
    Lungs breath, brains think.

Breathing can be unconscious or conscious.

What most people don’t realize is — so can thinking since it is an organic process just like breathing and will end for good when breathing does.

If you’d prefer these scrawls on your wall end just give the word and they will.

    Peace,

  2. WARNING: “Do not feed the trolls”

(from wikipedia) In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers (or poster) into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion. The noun troll may refer to the provocative message itself, as in: “That was an excellent troll you posted”.

Great how you stay authentic Wayne. Who came to my mind witnessing this is Nissargadatta Maharaj, in my belief a truly self realised master in his tradition. He smoked, ate meat, sat on a dead tiger skin and raged at people for asking unserious questions.

In one of the stories told by his followers he gave the floor to a smartass who thought had attained self realisation and cheakilly disrupted Maharaj’s teachings. Sri Maharaj went into silence and the student was told to teach instead. Soon the student realised his place and learned a valuable lesson in being humble.

    Ultreya!

  3. @Kevin: So true.

@Ingmar: So true. I’m sure She had a reason for impelling me to respond – probably to use him as a whipping boy example of the prevalence of Fundamentalist pseudo nondualism, but who knows.

    Revealing.
