SANDIA CASINO, ALBUQUERQUE, NM—In Advaita (nonduality), they call the Soul the Watcher, or the Observer or the Witness. It is that which experiences your life. But what are the properties of the Witness? What are the qualities of the Soul?
Over the last few weeks, I’ve been doing a little self-experimentation—a little spiritual exploring—and what I’ve discovered surprised the hell out of me.
It turns out that the Soul is either extremely stupid—or extremely trusting.
More below the break (huh?).
Note: This is a work in progress as my thoughts aren’t completely clear on all the specifics. What can I say? This is a blog, not a book.
To examine the Soul/Observer/Witness for yourself, you don’t have to be an expert on meditation, nor an enlightened guru, nor even all that spiritually advanced. No. In order to understand you-as-a-Soul, all you have to be is someone who knows how to fall asleep.
In order to understand you-as-a-Soul, all you have to be is someone who knows how to fall asleep.
As you lay down in bed tonight, do what I’ve been doing the last few weeks. Say to yourself, “I’m going to catch myself believing something stupid.”
As you start to drift off, notice how your mind starts telling you that you can fly, or that you’re adrift at sea, or an international spy, or that there are monsters chasing you through a dark forest.
Notice when your mind tells you these things—as you are drifting off to sleep—that you believe at the deepest level that these thoughts and images are true.
There are three components here:
- Your conscious, analytical mind which is now asleep
- Your subconscious mind which is supplying you with these thoughts
- You, the Soul/Witness/Observer, which is believing what the mind is telling you
Notice also that you-as-the-Soul-layer are experiencing raw, powerful emotions as a result of what you-as-the-Soul-layer are witnessing.
The first few nights that I experimented with this, I felt a little depressed. How could I-as-the-Soul be so stupid as to believe the outrageous images that my subconscious mind was generating?
Then I realized something else.
I-as-the-Soul believe what my conscious mind generates also.
Like an innocent child, I-as-a-Soul believe whatever my mind says—whether it is true or not.
It is not that the Soul is stupid. The Soul is just extremely trusting. What does a Soul have to fear? What does it have to protect? Nothing. Why would it not trust?
I-as-a-Soul am trusting.
I-as-a-Soul am filled with emotion.
I-as-a-Soul am as innocent as a young child.
You are not your thoughts. You are not your mind. You are not your past sins or accomplishments. You are not your job or career or your roles.
Let go of all that crap. It’s just a bunch of thoughts and images that your mind is hurling—like dark and smelly mud—at your open, innocent, and trusting Soul. Don’t believe it, don’t fall for it. You’re so much purer than that.
Do the experiment above and see for yourself.
Find the beauty, the innocence and the purity of your Soul-nature—of you-as-a-Soul.
Find the You which experiences your mind.
