SOMEWHERE OUTSIDE SOCORRO, NM—In an email, a reader was telling me, that while digging into his unconscious to find the truth of a childhood experience, he had a surprising perspective shift:
If I opened my eyes I could still see my arms and legs and part of my torso, but in no way did they feel like me or mine, just like a totally impersonal image floating in the space where I used to sit.
My response (slightly edited):
Your experience may be more valuable than you give it credit for… it showed you that it is possible to distance yourself from your body, thoughts and emotions. Not in a rational theoretical manner, but in an experiential manner. You now know it in your heart.
This living it (versus just thinking about theories) and how powerful living true to your beliefs is, is exactly why I advocate living as a Soul, then Radiance, prior to trying to drop the personal self. Living it has a dramatic effect of weakening the ego (the belief that you are a separate mortal being).
Keep practicing distancing yourself from your body, thoughts and emotions. Only the ego wants to hurry to “enlightenment” and that is just a silly game it plays on you.
When you get angry—say in a traffic jam—use the anger to remind yourself to distance yourself from the anger. When bored, focus on your body and distance yourself from it. Thoughts are harder (there’s nothing to remind you that you are thinking), so practice with emotions and the body first.
Practice, practice, practice.
