Natchez In Monochrome

SLIDELL, LA—Last Sunday morning, I arose early, grabbed the camera and strolled up, then back, the deserted Main Street of Natchez. Though it’s irrelevant to these photos, I always like to shoot city-scapes early in the morning (and preferably on a holiday) in order to get the “lonely photo” look that I love so well. It’s irrelevant to most of these shots just because most people can’t fly as high as I was shooting.

  1. Nice monochromatic photos! Any tips on how to get such crispness and silvertones? I am an amateur photographer, shooting in jpg and only have Photoshop Elements. Wondering if I could get similar results?

    • I shoot mostly in HDR—three photos merged into one using PhotoMatrix Pro to get a “High Dynamic Range.”

Then I tend to use a couple filters by Nik Color Effex Pro.

PhotoMatrix is a stand-alone app, but I use a really old version of Photoshop (CS3), so I don’t know if Nik works with Photoshop Elements. If you find they do, let me know as I should probably upgrade Photoshop but don’t like the subscription business model they are now using.

  2. Ah! Your photos are ‘lonely photos’! Now it makes sense! The solitary, melancholy beauty of many of them. They speak to me of this. Keep on doing what you’re doing, wayne 8^)

Probably one of the most beautiful and silently stirring photos I’ve seen.
I know you have a book. Do you sell individual portraits such as these? C

    • Glad you like it, but no, I’m not selling any photos (yet).

You’re free to make a print from any image (or use them for you computer or phone wallpaper), just don’t sell them or use them commercially (see the Creative Commons agreement at the bottom of any of these pages).
