Nihilism

The Void

The Void

FLAGSTAFF, AZ—Every time I see the word, nihilism, I think of the movie, The Big Lebowski, and every time I think of The Big Lebowski I think of what a perfect movie it is for any serious student of any nondual teaching because The Big Lebowski is anything but serious.

The Big Lebowski is about the Dude, who just wants to abide (and bowl). The Dude is a simple man who keeps getting draw into the entirely mentally-based lives of everyone else around him: Walter, the war veteran, where everything is about Vietnam; Donny, the clueless guy, who is so trapped in his mind that he has to constantly ask what’s going on around him; the feminist who wants a baby; the gold digger who wants a sugar daddy; the broke sugar daddy trying to maintain a facade of wealth; and of course the nihilists.

“We believe in nothing, Lebowski!”

Every serious spiritual student must face the Void… the Emptiness, the Meaninglessness, the Hell of Eternal Darkness… the Nothing.

Every serious spiritual seeker—because as I’ve said before, it’s all about identity—must face their existential angst.

“We believe in nothing, Lebowski!”

The Dude, chatting up the gold digger, comments on a guy, passed out and floating on an inner tube in the pool (ironically in bright sunlight… a pool of Light) and the gold digger says, “Uli doesn’t care about anything. He’s a Nihilist.,” to which the Dude replies:

“Ah, that must be exhausting.”

In the movie, the nihilists are always excessively dramatic. They are so forcefully adamant. The nihilists, who believe in nothing, take their nothing very seriously.

How can Nothing be so exhausting?

The spiritual seeker when confronting Emptiness—because their very identity is collapsing and at risk—take Nothing very seriously.

How can the Void be so frightening? How can Emptiness be so full of foreboding. How can nothing be full of such… something, such dark energy?

Because when the spiritual seeker honestly looks deeply into the Void, they become a Nihilist, and just like every other character in the movie—everyone except the Dude of course—nihilists believe in a mental concept. Nihilist believe in Nothing, and Nothing (Emptiness, the Void) is a mental concept and mental concepts are exhausting.

It is called the Gateless Gate for a reason. You are stumbling around in the dark, but you’ll never find a wall that you can run your hand along to an opening. Nope, you’ll find nothing. Nor will you come across some giant iron door, that when opened reveals a glorious Light. Nope, not that either.

It’s called the Gateless Gate because there is no gate, there is no wall. It’s called the Gateless Gate because the Endless Darkness that you are stumbling around in, the Nothing that appears so real, is just another mental concept.

“We believe in nothing, Lebowski!”

“Ah, that must be exhausting.”

The Light doesn’t shine out of the Darkness—there is no Gate/Darkness. It is the exact opposite: the Darkness comes out of the Light of Awareness.

The “Nothing” is an object in the Light of Awareness. The “Nothing” is a concept of the mind.

The Tao is the source of the ten thousand things…

The Tao is the source of the Nothing/Emptiness/Void.

The Tao is the Light.

  1. The gateless gate, where nobody stops, asks a million questions and gets no reply. There is no Saint Peter, just a giant pile of onion leaves littering the ground.

Love you and your words Wayne.

  2. A good post, an enjoyable read.

I would like to bring awareness to something i have encountered. After the consideration and observation of surroundings and nothing i realised, mind can not comprehend nothing.

In the darkness assumed to be nothing there is something, something conscious of what is assumed to be nothing. Amongst the something there is also a mist of darkness which is as black as it can be it is also something. While sat in complete darkness(whether that be here in the mortal realm or within realms above) the idea of nothing can truly not be perceived. Thus the endeavour to have mind understand it is useless it will never be capable of it because as soon as it tries it creates something to perceive it, in doing so it is doing the complete opposite to what it needs to be doing.

the best my mind here has come up with is turning of the lights to EVERYTHING. leaving only what was before, still not 100% nothing but it feels the emptiest of all things ever felt to me. At that the subject has been put to rest the search for nothing is over, the search for nothing within something is an endless cycle.

Here, Now, there is Everything And Nothing. One understandable and the other not understandable but without either one being here doesn’t exist.

I’ve briefly read nihilism and have not got a clue what it is however have put it down for a read at a later date, tomorrow.

    Yahwah Bless Amen.

  3. Good, humorous too:)

I saw that movie and liked it, although that Dude is always “high”. And the whole movie is done as if “under the influence” (of drugs), many scenes in it. And it’s funny, it’s about everyone’s inadequacy.

And I notice that you often write good things at the right time:) (A day earlier about Passion too.

Also, I began to read your “Fading Toward Enlightenment”, it’s such a good book.

    Good luck Wayne

  4. Nathan notes that “the idea of nothing can truly not be perceived” and it is interesting to read discussions by physicists, astronomers and philosophers and what exactly came “before” the universe was created, on what exactly is the “nothing” that could have come before the “something” that we continuously investigate.

Why, it’s enough to make many of them believe in God!

No matter how much we keep learning about the “something” we will never know the nature of nothing. Only She knows. The best I can do is abide.

  5. A thought arose as I imaged nothing and saw the picture you had uploaded for this post(also after the seeing the black album signing). As far as the imagination can go to simulate nothing it has 1 motive to create as little as possible with the intention of creating something to experience as nothing. First it will create one thing surrounding being and make it a solid colour, 2 options arise for what colour it should be either black or white. Most times a beings imagination will auto choose a black, black mist, black album, black photo. However solid White is equally acceptable but rarely used.

In solid white there is no more than just the solid white. Take the white away and there is nothing.(mind will instantly create black).

In solid black there is no more than just the solid black. Take the black away and there is nothing.(mind will instantly replace the black with more black, odd the choice to make it white is apparent yet is not chosen).

    hope it stands.
