The Gateless Gate

There Is No Gate

There Is No Gate

MT HOOD, ORMichelle is standing right in front of the Gateless Gate. All she has to do is step through. I can’t pull her through, nor can I sneak around behind her and push her through. Why? Because the Gate (separation) doesn’t exist. It’s all in your head. It’s built by the ego.

It’s called the gateless gate (an imaginary barrier that seems very real) because once you experience the me (the Gate) as just a mental construct, you “look back” and see it was all in your head. It’s not there anymore.

When you do step through, you lose the ability to say who or what you are. If you look at the last line of what I wrote yesterday, about my mom confusing me and TaoGodHer, you’ll notice that in the same sentence I do the same damn thing! And I do this all the time.

I don’t know who or what I am anymore and this doesn’t bother me in the least. In fact, I think this is a perfectly natural attitude for people who’ve stepped through the Gate. There is simply no Me-thing. There’s a Wayne-thing, a contraction that functions in the world, but that doesn’t feel like me anymore… it feels like other.

Here’s what I wrote Michelle yesterday to try to help encourage her to step through the Gateless Gate. If you’re close to the Gate, if you too are on the edge of the Void, then I hope this helps:

This is very, very, let me say it one more time, very important:

If you can see it, then it isn’t You.

If you can see or experience it, then it isn’t the Real You.

Right? There have to be TWO things there, You and that which you see or experience.

Tolle said on his realization (me quoting from memory), “I realized I hated myself. Then I realized who is hating who? Are there two of me? Which one is the real me?”

See my video Mystical vs Non-Mystical Enlightenment around the 1:20 mark, as my fingers, representing my boundaries, snap and disappear.

Don’t get hung up on what you ARE, but focus on what you are not.

Don’t try to define what you are, you can’t. I can’t tell you what I am—I do know I’m not made of “ORs” (this thing or that thing), but “ANDs.” (You are in control of yourself, AND you’re not in control of yourself.)

You’re right there on the edge. The Gateless Gate is right in front of you.

Are you your thoughts? Are you your experiences? Are you your memories? Are you your emotions?

Or are you that which experiences these things?

Don’t just think on this. Feel it. Go into Radiance, pull away and drop anything that is “not You”… anything that you can see and experience.

PS: I apologize to anyone to whom I didn’t post a testimonial from. Though I read every comment and email, I often forget to save compliments to my Testimonials folder (which is where I assembled the page from)—must be that discomfort-with-compliments thing I mentioned. I’ll try to do better from now on as I plan on updating that page on a monthly basis (much like I update the Favorite Photos page every month).

It's Time To Wake Up

Mystical Oneness and the Nine Aspects of BeingMystical Oneness and the Nine Aspects of Being is a step-by-step guide to enlightenment and beyond.

It contains everything you need in order to wake up to enlightenment, inner peace, and unconditional love.

This book was seven years in the making. It contains pretty much everything I know about enlightenment and the mystical realms beyond.

  1. Very good post – mind opening. Same with that video.
Not sure it`s that easy to pass through the gate though. For somebody standing at the gate just being aware that everything is an illusion doesnt just do it.
Maybe its not our call to make? Free will is an illusion so thinking that you can go through just because you want to might be ego at work. Maybe something/somebody does need to carry you on the other side. I dont know…
Myself Im currently at “who am I not” part but it is not something permanent and like somebody once said “it it aint abiding it aint jack” then I guess this is not it. And its quite obvious considering I still have the hunger.

    • A couple points:

      * It’s not easy, otherwise everyone would do it. That is why I am such an advocate of weakening/diminishing the ego by living as a Soul and then Radiance. Huge difference.

      * I’ve been working with Michelle for a few years now. She’s already tasting Emptiness, so this should be much easier for her than the average joe.

      * I believe “abiding nondual awareness” is a myth. Just another belief system. See this post.

    • @Andrei: I think I know what you mean, but free will can’t be a total illusion or we would all just be programmed robots stuck at a predetermined level of consciousness. It’s just a matter of realizing that sometimes the choices we make (or have made) are unconscious, and therefore conflicting. Whether or not some kind of divine intervention was needed, the “you” who was carried to the other side would no longer be you. Egos don’t become enlightened; they disintegrate and fade away.

      • On free will:
Im currently at the – trying to see what is and what isnt. I dont know if we are programmed robots or not. There are proofs to sustain both sides. And what if we are robots? Maybe we dont exist at all and we are just characters in a role-playing game where the end user commands us left and right, talk to a character or draw swords with another.
I wouldnt be surprised if that was true and one day we will be simply turned off.
However thats not really on my mind. Free will could be nothing more than an ego trap, giving us something to do and lose precious time in the process.
The whole free will thingie might be of use if we talk about stepping through the gate, if something/somebody needs to decide whether we are “worthy”

        On Conscious vs. unconscious choices:
From my experience, all choices we make based on our experience/background/desires/personality/ego/whatever are unconscious.
Lately I started to trust in the intelligence that governs life more than I trust myself. Whatever I decide based on “me” is not going to take me far and the end result might be a total failure.
When I just go with the flow, things unfold a lot easier. Maybe the end result is not what you desired in the first place but still something you can live with.
And ofc that takes us back to whether there is a free will or not, because if you only have the free will to fail, well thats not really free will after all.

I agree that the ego is discarded once you step through the gate. I know that from watching mine fading away each day passing and hoping that one day transition will end. I`m currently trying to speed up the process because Im getting bored with myself lol.

Need to add in the end that all this, on free will or unconscious choices or whatever, is based on my life experience and Im not in anyway pretending it to be a general rule.

        • free will:
you’ve created an illusion where it is not real. It’s your free will to do something, its anothers free will that can choose to get in your way.

it sounds like every choice you make through free will seems to fail? i don’t know what your trying to do with it but it must be destined to fail that way. If something goes wrong like that it is God saying “you are not meant to go that way”.

“And ofc that takes us back to whether there is a free will or not, because if you only have the free will to fail, well thats not really free will after all.” your given free will to chose the right way, if things are failing then that’s not the right way.

          ego:
“I agree that the ego is discarded once you step through the gate.” you don’t go through the gate and then the ego gets filtered out, with the ego you can’t fit through the gate.

“I`m currently trying to speed up the process because Im getting bored with myself lol.”
“I’m currently trying” – is it me or does that sounds like ego-i trying.
“I’m getting bored of myself” – this also sounds like ego-i is getting bored of ego-self.

I’m only going off Self experiences through-out this life, i have thought like you on free will, ego-i has also been bored of ego-self.

        • @Andrei: If you truly don’t know, I would say that’s a good place to be. Just don’t let an intellectualization lure you into avoiding responsibility for where you are.

  2. The gateless gate stands before me every time I suddenly become aware that the task that I am doing is actually being done without anybody at the helm. The sudden awareness that I am just witnessing something and am not actually involved in the doing is disturbing, even jolting. The moment goes “deep and wide” and there is a sense of being the eyes for something all encompassing. I am “it” and a part of “it” at the same time.

  3. “gateless gate” is not a mental construct, so understanding will not help us. sensory experiences of mysticism will not help. nothing in/ of this world will help one attain. like Everest, one summits by dropping EVERYTHING and yet NOTHING at all/ who’s dropping what? then silence ☼☼☼ awaken, everything is exactly as it should be. Just see, like the very first time we enter “this world”.
How can we not be blessed?
