Time Doesn’t Exist

The Power Lines

The Power Lines

Last night I went to bed knowing that I was going to be hit with the Insights again. I have a love/hate relationship with them and quite frankly—because of the book—I really don’t want to be bothered with them right now, so I’ll just relate the big one from last night: Time doesn’t exist.

(This is an example of one of those, someone-needs-to-hear-this-so-I’m-just-passing-on-what-She’s-telling-me posts.)

I’ve read probably a thousand times in spiritual texts that Consciousness exists outside of time yet I’ve never really understood it. Mostly some spiritual “expert” will say something like, “Consciousness is timeless” without any real explanation except for the implied, “I’m a guru, I’m a hell of a lot smarter than you, so just believe me.” Other times, explanations are given using pseudo-science, enormously big words, spiritual jargon and deeply flawed logic.

Last night, She said:

Time requires memory and memory requires Consciousness.

Now that makes sense to me.

If you didn’t remember what happened a second ago (or any events before that), then you’d (Plop!) just be here (ie: The Eternal Present). Time is just the memory of a bunch of connected moments (Plop! Plop! Plop! Plop!), and in order for us to remember something, there must be a constant, consistent Consciousness/Awareness that these memories happen inside of.

Therefore time requires (is dependent on) Consciousness and thus Consciousness comes before time, which can be translated into the ever popular but poorly explained, “Consciousness exists outside of time.

Sort of like Consciousness exists outside of (before) Matter.

But… it also means (I think. Maybe? I dunno know—maybe I’m sleeping too close to the power lines.) that time isn’t a real thing (it’s a Horton). Time is just a mental concept (a memory)… which leads down a deep and dark physics rabbit hole that I’d rather not think about.

Alright, enough of the Insights, please and thank-you. I’m telling you, I love ’em and I hate ’em.

  1. In my experience, there are some states of consciousness where life appears not as a sequence of events, but as a continuous flow (like “waves of life”). In such a state, there is no ‘before’ or ‘after’, no beginning and no end. Since you don’t have any marker of time, you have no notion of time. Life is timeless.
In physics, defining a proper notion of time is still an open debate (e.g. continuous vs quantized spacetime). But I like the following analogy: when a material entity travels at the ‘speed of light’, due to time dilation, it does not seem to age – as if time had stopped. When a spiritual entity travels at the ‘speed of life’, so does it become timeless. There is no time but ‘now’.
