Every morning, ever since the OS Reboot, I’ve noticed my heart has opened up just a little bit more than the day before. Not because of some effort or practice, but all on its own. … Read more…

The Map of Identity (Revision 3)

Map 3

MT. HOOD, OR

September 29, 2015 5:05 PM

Here’s an updated version of the Map of Identity. While I find maps useful, I’m not a cartographer. I’m not into sitting in a dark room, gathering a lot of data from a lot of explorers and consolidating it into the perfect, most useful map ever. My maps are what I sketch out by actually going out into the world and exploring. Not 100% accurate, but they’ll show me that if I head north up the coast, I’ll find a nice protected bay with fresh water springs and hot women, and if I turn south down the coast, I’ll find these sweet islands where the natives are friendly and the daiquiris are cool and refreshing. In other words, my maps aren’t about abstract terrain features as much as they are about the lived experience. … Read more…

The Trials as Reminders

Procrastinating around Camp.

Procrastinating around Camp.

WALLOWA-WHITMAN NF, OR

I tore off small chunks of bread from the last two pieces of the loaf and tossed them about, consciously covering as much area as possible so the various ant colonies have a better chance of finding them. It’s not something I think about anymore—I don’t think about not swatting flies, or not stepping on bugs, or not killing innocent insects just because they are an annoyance—it has just become natural not to harm them. I love them.

(I’ll still kill the occasional attacking insect if they don’t take a hint—I’m not perfect (dammit)—but I do apologize to them and wish them well on their next life.) … Read more…

As I sat in a little local coffeehouse contemplating a route through eastern Oregon, I downloaded and played with Snapseed, an iPhone/iPad app for editing photos (see my first attempt above). One of my fantasies is to wander around the country like Jack Reacher with nothing but the clothes on my back and an iPhone or iPad in my pocket, but I couldn’t figure out how to make good qualities photos… until now. Hmm… I can see the possibilities. … Read more…

Truths Once Forgotten

Seen but soon forgotten

BOISE, ID

After spending a few days in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho (what a beautiful area!), I rolled down through the foothills and on into the state capital for a little city time. Life is wonderful when home is where the van is.

In filling out the outline for the book, I’m (finally) on the last leg of the discovery phase: going through my entries in A Mystic’s Journal. What’s been cool about this exercise is that I will often come across insights—unbeknownst to me at the time—that were the initial glimmers of key phases of my later development.

Glimmers of Truth that, more often than not, would soon be forgotten. … Read more…

Where the Flycatcher was

Where the Flycatcher was

NEAR SWAN VALLEY, ID

September 5, 2015 1:19 PM

As I looked up from my Kindle, as I thought over the words I had just read, as I expanded and my self boundaries collapsed and vanished, I noticed the trees around me were filled with dozens of various birds of all shapes and colors: black and white woodpeckers skittering on the trunks, grey and dusky flycatchers looping off the branches, robins hopping about among the fallen leaves, and these yellow and brown wrens(?) flittering about in the bushes by the creek. None of these birds were here yesterday, and, as I type this an hour later, none of these birds are here now. … Read more…

Tree on a Hill

ROCK SPRINGS, WY

Though I hadn’t planned it, I woke up expecting to leave my cool and isolated camp today. Two hours later, a shepherd (as in herder of sheep) pulling his little vardo-like wagon and cargo trailer appeared on my mile long, dead end road and I greeted him and said, “Don’t worry, you’re not going to have to back up, I’ll be out of here in five minutes,” and (much to his delight for I don’t know how he could have gotten his dual trailers turned around with me parked there), I broke camp and drove away.

This blog goes through “theory phases” every so often, and I really don’t care too much for them, so I’ll finish off the “Map of Identity” (new Map) with something I realized while creating it: We don’t exist at any one place on the map.Read more…

Feeling the need for a change in venue, I broke camp and headed north. I’m considering heading west to (eventually) the coast and from there heading down the coastal highway as winter comes on, but who knows? Freedom is a wonderful thing.

Above is an image of my new map of consciousness which I’ve put together for the book. These are phases that I’ve gone through over the years in my spiritual quest. … Read more…

What I Mean By “I, The Eternal”

There is an inner you and an outer you. This should be quite obvious once you think about it: I have all these inner experiences (thoughts, sense of self, imagination, dreams, desires, …), and I have all these outer experiences (trees, rocks, chairs, friends, lovers, …).

For years, I’ve been saying that to truly grow spiritually, we have to bring our spirituality to life. We have to live it.

With the realization of me, the Eternal (and I’ll explain this term in a moment), I see a wonderful analogy here. … Read more…

The result of my OS Reboot. The following is based on my personal experiences, so this “map” will differ from other religious, philosophical, and people’s theories. I doubt it is complete (ie: Version I), and I’m not sure where I’m going with it, but in the interest of transparency, here’s what I/She/We wrote this morning in coffee shop in Colorado Springs: … Read more…
