Before we get into the details of the map, it is important to realize that no one exists exclusively as a single level on the map. No one is all Ego, or all Soul, or all TaoGod(I). Everyone consists as a mixture of the levels.
To understand this concept, it might help to think of the map as a sort of identity portfolio. Just as an investment portfolio may consists of your savings distributed across it—10% mutual funds, 20% in stock XYZ, 50% in CDs, …—your identity will be invested in various percentages across the map. No one—contrary to popular opinion—is 100% X (Mystic or Ascetic or Witness or I AM). Still, our identities tend to be heavily invested—to be centered in—one level of the map at a time.
Please keep this weighted approach to spiritual identity in mind as we explore the map from the ground up.
The Hell Realm
The Hell realm is where suffering arises—both physical suffering at the Mortal level and psychological suffering at the Ego and Shadow levels.
In the Hell realm, we take practically everything personally.
The Mortal Level
The Mortal Level is the level of our body—of our physical being.
The primary motivation for this level is survival.
The main things we value at this level—what are important to us—are safety, health, comfort, pain avoidance, sex, and reproduction.
At this level, we are driven not by rational thought, but by instinctual reactions.
The Ego Level
The Ego Level is the level of our personal story—of our roles and past and self-centered beliefs.
The primary motivation for this level is winning—of getting our way.
The main things we value at this level are control, social status, relationships and most of all, the defense and structural integrity of the Me-story.
At this level, we are primarily influenced by conscious thoughts and emotions.
The Shadow Level
The Shadow Level is the level of repressed memories.
The primary motivation for this level is to protect the Ego from psychological harm through repression of painful memories.
The main thing the Shadow values is the psychological well-being of the Ego.
The Shadow is primarily influenced by fear.
The Limbo Realm
The Limbo realm is a realm where self-boundaries have either dramatically faded (Soul and Witness) or dissolved altogether (I AM). Because the Hell realm has been transcended, suffering is no longer taken personally. Though both physical and emotional pain will still be experienced, there is no personal ownership of the pain, so one can be said to be free from suffering.
The Soul Level
The Soul Level is the level of our immortality—of our transcendent being.
The primary motivation for this level is resolution of karmic influences.
The main things we value at this level are self-improvement, living authentically, and the influence of our actions on our future lives.
At this level, we are primarily influenced by the LOSS of fear, and the freedom that loss provides.
The Witness Level
The Witness Level is the level of detachment—of standing apart from all that is observed.
The primary motivation of this level is to see though the illusion of all self boundaries and separation.
The only thing the Witness values is detaching from—and remaining detached from—anything that is observed.
At this level, we are primarily influenced by our conditioned self-centered thoughts and our relentless desire to detach from them.
The I AM Level
The I AM Level is the level of integration.
The primary motivation of this level is to resolve the Paradox of Separation and Unity—of the differences between the manifest world (the Seen) with those of the Witness (the experiencer of the Seen).
As I AM, we value the Truth that lies BEYOND thought.
At this level—once the Paradox has been resolved—we are not influenced by anything. Everything is accepted exactly as it is.
The Divine Realm
The Divine realm is the realm of Cosmic Consciousness. It is the realm of the awakening of a second personality in both the inner and outer experiences. It is the awakening of an all knowing, all powerful, all loving personality—both separate and one with the spiritual seeker.
Where the Limbo realm is a realm experienced as internal solitude, the Divine realm is experienced as an intimate relationship with the Divine—the Divine as both Self and Other.
The Mystic Level
The Mystic Level is the level of communion with the Divine.
The primary motivation of this level is to get to know the Divine better.
The main things we value at this level are synchronistic events (synchronicity implies God), communing with the Divine, and flowing with Life.
At this level, we are primarily influenced by the CAUSE of the increase in odds-defying good luck. We discover that the less there is of “me,” the more there is of the Divine (as evidenced by an increase in synchronicity/good luck).
The Ascetic Level
The Ascetic Level is the level of surrender.
The primary motivation of this level is to achieve complete union with the Divine.
All we value here is the Divine—Her Will, Her Love, and Her existence.
At this level, we are primarily influenced by the SUBTLE Self archetypes: subtle Self-concern, subtle Self-awareness, subtle Self-centeredness, subtle Self-consciousness. We see these core, shared human qualities as standing in the way of our goal to merge fully with the Divine.
The TaoGod(I) Level
The TaoGod(I) Level is the level of union with the Divine. Similar to I AM’s resolution of the Separation/Unity paradox, at this level the Individual and Divine paradox has been resolved.
At this level, were are primarily motivated by Love.
As TaoGod(I) we value above all else the Dance of the Divine (God manifest as all things).
At this level, we are primarily influenced by the effects of the Divine living AS us—of BEING God breathing.
Note: At the level of TaoGod(I), since everyone is seen as the embodiment of the Divine, there is no feeling of specialness—no feeling of being a messiah or savior. Everyone (and every manifest thing) is recognized as divine—everything IS God breathing.
